The TWGHs is one of the largest charitable organization in Hong Kong. Over 150 years, TWGHs has endeavored to relieve the hardship of the disadvantaged and foster social inclusion with its comprehensive medical and health, education and community services by maximizing Government subventions, public donations and operating income. All direct expenses and administration costs of its fund-raising events are sponsored by the Board and Title Patrons to ensure that every dollar of the public donations goes directly to the Group’s services for the public. Today, TWGHs operates 350 service centers with over 17,000 staff.

LEADING THROUGH CHANGES AND RETAINING TALENTS

Staff are the most valuable assets of TWGHs. To upkeep its competitiveness in the labour market, Tung Wah has been continuously executing new initiatives including reviewing of its pay structure, incentive schemes and manpower support, evaluating job duties and titles, enhancing communication channels, actively participating in external recruitment talks and job fairs, organizing staff engagement workshops, knowledge sharing sessions and training activities, developing HR e-Systems, promoting equal opportunity policies and fulfilling Corporate Social Responsibilities by engaging in University placement programmes and setting up HR/IT Executive Trainee Schemes.

MAINTAINING A CARING CULTURE IN FACE OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

TWGHs treasures its valuable workforce and strives to ensure the provision of a safe and healthy work setting. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, TWGHs has taken various proactive HR initiatives in providing flexible work arrangements to staff. Guidelines on the “Work From Home” arrangement were issued, office hours have been shortened, flexible lunch hour has been arranged; and leaves have been given to staff to facilitate home isolation/compulsory quarantine. Moreover, a half-day release is provided to staff for taking up the Universal Community Testing Programme and the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme during office hour. One extra vaccination leave day is also granted to staff for each dose of vaccine received. Other than producing promotion videos encouraging staff to take the vaccination, to further boost vaccination amongst staff, a cruisecation package lucky draw was organized for staff who had taken two doses of vaccination.

With a view to proactively engaging staff amidst the restrictions of social distancing measures, substantial efforts were made in organizing welfare activities for staff, such as Table Tennis Tournament, Bowling Tournament, Sports Teams Annual Gathering and Staycation Tours to upkeep their morale and enhance their sense of belonging to the Group. Gift boxes containing herbal teas and health products were sent to staff in the annual Thankful/Cheer Day and the use of social media platforms has been maximized to enhance the connection with staff and reinforce the ‘Tung Wah Cares’ culture. Through the YouTube Channel “Tung Wah+”, the Group had live broadcasted staff lucky draws, work-life balance programmes, health maintenance daily exercises demos by professional coaches, Staff Christmas Party and lunch gathering of Tung Wah sports teams. The Tung Wah Staff Relations Production Team had also produced videos of kick-off ceremonies and featured interviews on lifestyle and festive celebration subjects with Members of the Board.

PROMOTING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE AND LEARNING CULTURE

TWGHs takes a proactive stance to promote work-life balance by organizing an annual Work-Life Balance Month in October filled with well-being workshops, “Lights off on Time” and “Dress Down in Summer” campaigns. Social and recreational activities such as sports tournaments, leisure tours and team building workshops under the theme “Embrace your life, Rejoice in Tung Wah! (擁抱生活.樂在東華)” are organized and the “Employee Assistance Programme”, which is a 24-hour independent counselling hotline service is arranged to provide comprehensive support for staff.

In driving continuous learning in TWGHs, over 1,000 training programmes have been conducted/sponsored (mostly on online platforms) and to upkeep the learning atmosphere, virtual training workshops have been organized for staff to enhance their knowledge, performance, capability and communication skills. The Group has also sponsored Degree and post-degree programmes for staff’s self-development and career advancement.

ENHANCING WELFARE BENEFITS AND STRENGTHENING STAFF COHESIVENESS

Apart from equipping staff for career growth, TWGHs cares much for the well-being of its staff and provides them with medical benefits, welfare grants, special leaves, and interest free loans. TWGHs strives to optimize fringe benefits for its staff, such as advancing the extension of maternity leave from 10 weeks to 14 weeks, which was one year earlier than that enforced by the Government; and extending the travel period from 18 months to 30 months for the awardees of Long Service Travel Panel Awards for providing more flexibility and time for staff to plan their trip as well as allowing staff to carry forward untaken leaves owing the travel restrictions imposed under the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, a Staff Commendation Scheme in recognition of staff/teams’ outstanding performance/contributions in hurdling over the challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic was launched.

TOP-DOWN COMMITMENT SUPPORT BY THE BOARD

In demonstrating Tung Wah’s commitment and determination to render a positive, versatile and healthy environment for its staff, the Board and the management have introduced a variety of employee engagement initiatives. Other than having its own Staff Dragon Boat, Football and Marathon team, Tung Wah also encouraged and sponsored its staff to participate in sports tournaments as an individual or team. The Board has fully displayed its support for these staff engagement activities and actively participated in the staff sports tournaments, Staff Dragon Boat Race, regular staff cheering events, Work-Life Balance Month, Christmas Party and Annual Dinner.

CHAMPION THE HUMAN RESOURCES PROFESSIONALISM

Employee bonding in TWGHs originates from “Home”. Aspiring to be the second home for its staff, TWGHs takes care of its employees and their families’ work-life issues, and nurtures staff with its code of ethics in providing quality services to its clients and by treating them like their next of kin. The Group’s concerted efforts on human resources management had won many external awards such as the HR Asia Best Companies to Work for in Asia (Hong Kong Chapter) (2015 – 2021), WeCare™: HR Asia Most Caring Companies Award 2020, HR Excellence Awards 2019/2020, the Manpower Developer (2014-2022), Good Employer Charter & Family-friendly Good Employer, Mental Health Workplace Charter, HR Appreciation Awards 2020 “COVID-19 Special Award – NGO”, commendation certificates for promoting Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace and Organ Donation (2018/19), triple awards in the “2017/2018 Family-Friendly Employers Award Scheme”, “Privacy-Friendly” Gold Certificate under the “Privacy-Friendly Awards 2021” and Happy Organization 5years+.
